“Faces of Egypt”

Documenting the Discovery of King Tutankamen’s Tomb

Pastels by Howard Freemont Stratton, Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art

Opens: Saturday, September 23, 2023; Closes Sunday, December 31, 2024

Free with admission to the Musuem.

Howard Freemont Stratton, one of the original stockholders in the community of Rose Valley, spent time at the Tutankamen tomb site in 1925-1926.  While there he chose to make pastel drawings of the native Egyptian peasant to show their qualities of dignity and self-respect.  the use of pastel as the most suitable medium for interpreting the qualities of objects and atmosphere in the dry region around the Nile allowed the rendering of its colorfulness without crudity.  The signatures on Mr. Stratton’s sketches are made in Egyptian hieroglyphics.  18 pastels will be exhibited.
