Charles Hallowell Stephens, one of the original owners of Thunderbird Lodge, was a teacher (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts), photographer, illustrator, and one of America’s foremost authorities on Indians at the turn of the 19th century. As an illustrator he specialized in the depiction of Native American subjects, in connection with which he formed an important collection of artifacts, many of which are now in the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia.
