“Darby Meeting for Sufferings 1775-1820: An alternative perspective on America’s 250th”

Harold Finigan, a presenter from the Darby Friends Meeting, will introduce the administrative workings of Quaker meetings during the early years of the United States. In 1756, the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting established a “Meeting for Sufferings”—a representative body that functioned as an administrative and executive committee when the Yearly Meeting was not in session. Originally created in Britain to track the persecution of Friends and seek redress, the committee retained its name even as its responsibilities expanded.
