SUMMARY:Darby Quakers & The Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:“Darby Quakers & The Underground Railroad”\nLiving Values in an Intentional Community\nHarold Finigan\, Historic Preservationist and Educator\, will discuss how the people of Delaware County worked against the immoral nature of slavery. During the growth of this country some saw slaves as the answer to do all the hard work that was needed to build a nation. Some\, however\, who had bought into the ideas of freedom & Penn’s Holy Experiment\, saw slavery as inconsistent with these ideas. A portion of those who held that view worked outside the system\, while others worked within the system to convince their brethren that slave-holding was inconsistent with the Golden Rule.\nSunday\, April 21\, 2024\, 4pm\nLecture followed by small reception\n$20 per person ($15 members) \nNote location: Grace Rotzel Center at The School in Rose Valley. \nRegister Now!\nReservations: call 484-444-2961 (leave a message)\nPayment can be made online or at the door. Click here to register online.\nParking at the School in Rose Valley at the end of School Lane. \n

SUMMARY:Members Only Open House
DESCRIPTION:“Members Only Open House”\nHome of Megan Hicks and Jack Abgott\, the “Story” house\n3 Rose Valley Road\, Media\, PA 19063\nSunday\, June 23\, 2024\, 5-8pm\nDonation: $25 per person (Members may invite one guest to join them for the same fee) \nMegan Hicks and Jack Abgott are graciously opening their home and grounds for viewing by our members. In 1954\, H. Mather Lippincott designed this home for his family. The second (current) owners of the home have never substantially altered the original design. It is truly mid-century; exhibiting the modernist qualities of clean lines\, volumetric geometries\, a horizontal emphasis\, open plan\, and the absence of ornamentation tempered by the generous use of natural materials and light\, as well as a nearly seamless embedment of the home in its landscape. Like many houses designed by architects for themselves\, budget was an issue and experimentation was rampant. Instead of walnut\, we have poplar and Masonite. Instead of conventional heating the house boasts a rather unique forced air radiant floor system. \nAs usual there will be light fare including tea or slider sandwiches\, assorted summer salads\, and desserts served.  Beverages include wine\, beer\, cider\, ice tea and lemonade.   Information on the house and it’s design elements will be available.  Jack\, whose professional interests involve historic restoration\, will be happy to answer any questions. \nRegister Now!\nReservations required: call 484-444-2961 (leave a message)\nPayment can be made online or at the door. Click here to register online.\nParking will be along Hilltop Road. \n

SUMMARY:Building The School in Rose Valley
DESCRIPTION:“Building The School in Rose Valley”\nCarl Finkbeiner\, photographer\, RVMHS and (past) SRV board member will present a talk about The School in Rose Valley.  The stories that the buildings of The School in Rose Valley (SRV) have to tell about the institution and what it shares with its enveloping Rose Valley community are more remarkable than most people know.  If you only know SRV or if you only know Rose Valley\, or maybe even if you think you know both\, you will find that the buildings’ stories have a lot to teach us about hidden histories and connections that will only deepen your appreciation of the two.\nSunday\, November 24\, 2024\, 4pm\n$20 per person ($15 members) \nNote location: Grace Rotzel Center at The School in Rose Valley. \nRegister Now!\nReservations:\nCall 484-444-2961 (leave a message)\nEmail: programs@rosevalleymuseum.org\nPayment can be made online or at the door. SUMMARY:A Family of Artists: Alice\, Charles\, and Owen Stephens
DESCRIPTION:“A Family of Artists: Alice\, Charles\, and Owen Stephens”\nIn 1904 Charles and Alice Stephens\, both successful artists\, moved to Rose Valley.  Used to living in the intimacy of the city\, the move to the wilds of suburban Philadelphia was a courageous step to “give [their] son the chance for an out-of-door life near his school”.  Their presence in and philosophical recognition of this Arts & Crafts community lent a certain eminence to the experiment\, so others might be encouraged to become neighbors.  So\, who were the Stephens family and what is their legacy?  Sue Keilbaugh\, President of the Rose Valley Museum\, will try to answer that question. \nSunday\, March 23\, 2025\, 4pm\n$20 per person ($15 members) \nNote location: Grace Rotzel Center at The School in Rose Valley. \nRegister Now!\nReservations:\nCall 484-444-2961 (leave a message)\nEmail: programs@rosevalleymuseum.org\nPayment can be made online or at the door. SUMMARY:Will Price - Grasping the Architectural Possibilities of the New Life
DESCRIPTION:“Will Price”\nGrasping the Possibilities of the New Life\nJoin Bruce Laverty\, adjunct professor\, Pennoni Honors College and the Westphal College of Media Arts and Design\, Drexel University. \nIn 1930\, architect George Howe\, lamented that “America has always been the land of the lone prophet\, without much but posthumous honor in their own country.” He believed the first American architects to fully comprehend the “spiritual consequences” of their work were Frank Lloyd Wright\, Louis Sullivan and Will Price. Wright and Sullivan emerged from the obscurity that Howe decried\, but not Price.  Laverty will examine the pivotal role that Rose Valley’s Will Price played in American art\, architecture\, and self-identity. He will review recent successful efforts to shine a light on this “lone prophet” and discuss what Price can teach us today. \nSunday\, April 27\, 2025\, 4pm\n$20 per person ($15 members) \nNote location: Grace Rotzel Center at The School in Rose Valley. \nRegister Now!\nReservations:\nCall 484-444-2961 (leave a message)\nEmail: programs@rosevalleymuseum.org\nPayment can be made online or at the door. SUMMARY:Delco Gives Day - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Delco Gives Day – 2025\nRose Valley Museum\n\nThis year\, help us to replace the beloved Great Minquas Path Monument that was stolen!\nDonate starting at 7pm on Thursday\, May 8th and ending on Friday\, May 9th at 7pm. \nIn 1926\, led by Charles Stephens\, Rose Valley resident and Native American expert\, and the Pennsylvania Historical Commission\, the community installed a bronze statue of a beaver by sculptor Albert Laessle\, and a bronze plaque\, designed by Charles Stephens\, to commemorate the native Americans who trekked from the Susquehanna through Rose Valley and the Great Minquas Path they traveled on. The monument stood until in 2021 when the beaver and plaque were pried off their stone base\, probably to be melted down. They have never been found. \nRose Valley Museum & Historical Society\, along with others in the community\, are raising funds to commission a reproduction of the statue and plaque\, based on historical plans.  We hope to install them at the original location using the original stone pillar and with appropriate security precautions to prevent future theft.  Our goal is to dedicate the new monument in September 2026\, exactly 100 years after the original dedication. Your donation will help us achieve that goal! \nA festive afternoon and evening will close out the event on Friday at Rose Tree Park from 4:30 to 7:30pm where there will be food trucks\, music\, the Philly Phanatic and more! Join the fun! \nDonations at the site will only be taken from 7:00 pm on May 8th to 7:00 pm on May 9th.  You can donate by check\, or on our web site before that; just be sure to indicate that your donation is targeted for the Delco Gives drive.  The “Make a Contribution” button is at the bottom of our homepage or at the left top of the Membership page.  Check out our page at the DelcoGives.Org site for the full story of the Great Minquas Path marker. \n\n
